Essential oils are the basic remedies that have been used for many ages and generations. The most common of those oils are the eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil. They have been used for many types of remedies. There are essential oils that can be used for illnesses and pains and then there are essential oils for sleep. But did you know that a lot of parents have been using these oils in a wrong way?

Essential Oils That Are Not For Children

According to Scott A. Johnson, a Board Certified Alternative Medical Practitioner, Certified Clinical Master Aromatherapist and a Certified Elite Essential Oil Specialist, that adult and children have a very different reaction when it comes to a number of types of medicine being applied to them. That includes even the essential oil because essential oils are basically considered as alternative medicines.   

In recent studies, there are certain essential oils that must not be applied or used on young children. Whether the purpose is for medical remedies or using essential oils for sleep, a parent should know the right kind of essential oil that must be used for their children.

One of those essential oils that you should not use for kids is the peppermint oil. While there have been instances that peppermint has helped a lot of people, it is now considered not good for children especially those with age five and below. 

Other popular essential oils that you should avoid using to your children are rosemary oils, eucalyptus, sweet birch, and wintergreen oils. Methyl salicylate that is commonly found in wintergreen and sweet birch oils have known to cause respiratory discomfort, dizziness, seizures and sometimes even lead to death. 

Alternative Essential Oils For Children

For cases that you need essential oils for your home, the safe and highly recommended essential oils are lemon oil, pine oil, frankincense, cedar wood, cinnamon, clove, melaleuca, thyme, and oregano oil. These oils have a mild effect on young children, especially on sensitive skin. But still, applying these oils should be done in a fair and limited amount with proper dilution.

Also according to studies, these oils, when properly mixed can act as an immune-supporting blend for your little ones. It is advised that the solution should be applied onto the feet area. That is because the feet can withstand the hot-oil-effect of these essential oils.

For example, pine and myrtle oil are good for kids and infants with congestion problem. These oils are commonly known as respiratory supporting oils. The proper way of using these oils is through topically applying on the back and in the chest area. Parents should observe proper dilution and controlled amount when applying these oils. Again, try to avoid eucalyptus oils for your children as it might cause respiratory distress.

For elevated temperature, the best alternative is the lemon oil. Topically apply a small amount onto the spine area. This will help maintain the normal temperature of the child.

Stomach aches can be eased by using ginger oil and lemon oil. Rub a few drops on the stomach area and it will eventually bring a better feel to your young one.

There are so much more these essential oils can do. But despite their medical benefits, they should still be used with caution. Learn the proper mixing, dilution, and application in order to experience its many advantages.
