Japanese stunt rider breaks world record with 13 hour, 500km wheelie
If asked what were the 13 most memorable hours of your life, answers could come from extreme ends of the spectrum of possibilities — from that difficult trek in the Himalayas to that peaceful sleep in the most comfortable bed you ever crashed into.
Ask Masabu Abe, the answer would be wheelying.
Abe, a self-proclaimed Japanese “Wheelie King”, took to the Kawaguchi Auto Race facility in Japan’s Saitama recently to break the previous world record of a marathon wheelie — of 331.0195km in eight hours. The vehicle which was put to test, besides Abe, was Yamaha Jog 125.
Two hours after he first lifted Jog 125’s front wheel, Abe experienced back pain, reported Guardian last week. It took him 13 long, tiring and painful hours to break the 500km mark.
“He rode 500.5322km in more than 13 hours, five hours longer than it took him to surpass the previous record, 331.0195km,” the Guardian said.
According to Overdrive, Abe kept revving the scooter at around 40kmph by constantly adjusting the throttle.
One might ask, did the 125cc scooter run for that long with no refuel? No.
Abe’s support team provided him a timely supply of fuel which he could fill the tank with through a special funnel-type apparatus. The team also supplied him with energy drink cans to keep himself hydrated.
But energy drinks cannot relieve muscles, especially when you’re on a one-wheeled bike for 13 hours. Abe kept moaning and screaming in pain as he spoke with his team via microphones.
Abe’s endurance finally paid off, and after more than 726 laps of the circuit — a total distance of 500.5322km, Abe put the front down, and proved why he could rightfully call himself the “Wheely King”.
