Gurgaon IRCS officials: Unauthorised use of Red Cross logo to incur Rs500 fine
Gurgaon: The Indian Red Cross Society’s (IRCS) logo, of a red coloured plus sign, should not be used by doctors, chemists or homeopathy pharmacies in Gurgaon, IRCS officials said.
The institutes and vehicles that have the emblem have to replace it within a week or pay Rs500 as a penalty for misusing the emblem, IRCS officials said.
“The Red Cross emblem is patented under the Geneva Convention of 1949 and there is a need to protect it. It can be used only by Red Cross Society or by ambulances in war zones. Not all medical practitioners are entitled to use the logo,” said Shyam Sunder, district secretary of IRCS, Gurgaon.
The IRCS will enforce this law from May 8, which is observed as Red Cross Day. Hoardings will be put up to inform the public about the issue and that unauthorised use of the emblem is a punishable offence.
“There are already different logos for doctors and ambulances. For doctors, the logo is of a caduceus — two entwined snakes with wings. Ambulances can use the logo of the rod of Asclepius — one snake coiled on a rod, set against a blue background,” he said.
The IRCS will organise a week-long campaign, in association with hospitals and pharmacists, to spread awareness about the misuse of the emblem.
The officials of IRCS will also distribute stickers of the approved logos to hospitals, doctors and pharmacists. The campaign will aim to popularise other logos and to encourage people to opt for newer logos in the city.
