The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opposed ICC’s proposal of a World Test Championship, wondering how the prescribed structure holds any ground without certain members acquiring full-member status.

The board has also dismissed the ICC’s plan to hold a two-day working group meeting to discuss the structure of the proposed World Test Championship. The BCCI has categorically ruled out agreeing to any of the governing body’s criteria asking for changes to the Test calendar, according to a report in Cricbuzz.

The international cricket body’s proposed 9 + 3 structure was to have a four-year cycle for Test cricket scheduled to begin in 2019.

“How can a 9 + 3 structure be proposed in the first place when the ICC Board is yet to give official confirmation to Ireland and Afghanistan’s full membership status? They (some ICC board members) are just trying to test the waters and gauge the mood of members. In the process, they’re still thinking that a ‘weak’ BCCI may not resist,” an official in the knowledge of this news told The Times of India.

During the ICC’s Board Meeting in October last year, the BCCI had clearly opposed the proposed two-tier Test structure, according to the report. However, the proposal eventually received a 7-2 structure in principle vote in February, with only India and Sri Lanka voting against it.

“That will not continue to be the case going further,” a BCCI official said, refusing to go into any further details for now.

BCCI is hoping that it will have enough strength to counter the proposed policies of ICC in a vote count during the ICC’s Chief Executive Meeting to be called for in April, the report added.

The board has decided to maintain a clear stand for the perceptions that India’s apex body is losing ground in the ICC in the wake of an interim administration.
